I was having an interesting conversation with a buddy of mine (one of the top producers in a direct sales company who made ~$500,000 in one year because he followed the principles shared here on this website) and he made a good point that struck a chord with me.
He’s generated easily over 30,000 leads in his career while building up that business; of course many of those folks signed up with him (helping him reach that half a million dollar a year mark) but he also noted that of those 30,000, FAR more dropped off (unsubscribed from his email list) than signed up as a downline.
His observation is that if you push a business opportunity too hard for too long, your list gets burned out quickly (meaning people lose interest in not just your business but YOU in general), resulting in lots of unsubscribes and uninterested people and well, lost opportunity. He guesstimates that about 50% of folks on a business opportunity list gets burned out if that’s all you do.
So here you are, working you butt off generating all these leads and by pushing ONLY your business opportunity until the end of time, you lost over half of those people – WHAT A WASTE!
Some Just Don’t Care About Your Biz Opp, But They Still Have Money to Give You
- Keep trying to shove your business opportunity down people’s throats
- Switch gear after a bit and offer something else…
Let’s see here, the implication of #1 is you’ll just burn people out, play like a broken record, and make them think you have absolutely nothing else of value to offer them. So they say “peace out”, unsubscribe, and you just lost yet another lead you worked for.
The implication of #2 is while they may not be open to your business opportunity at the moment (they’ll keep it in mind) they are looking for some other stuff… let me rephrase, they could be OPEN to looking at and buying other “stuff” from you. This means you have potential to monetize on this lead you worked for.
The Question Then Becomes, What Other “Stuff?”
Well, think about your market, your leads. Who are they and what do they want if not your business opportunity?
You have folks who are looking for business opportunity but just not the one you are promoting. Well, that brings us to the topic of if you should join another MLM and promote that after a certain time has passed (and the leads didn’t join you in the MLM you were promoting to them originally). I personally promote a direct sales opportunity up front followed by a network marketing opportunity afterwards.
You have folks who are happily in a business opportunity already and are just keeping their options open – yet they still aren’t interested in your business opportunity. So what could they be looking for?
Well, like any home business owner, they are looking to grow their businesses and for ways to make more money. In essence, they are looking for leadership and expertise, folks who can teach them something, folks who can help them grow.
And that’s where info products and affiliate products come in.
First, what is an affiliate product? An affiliate product is simply a product someone else created that you promote. And any sales you make, you get a cut. You can find tons of affiliate products out there and obviously, you want to choose ones that are relevant to your market (that your leads would actually consider valuable and buying) and also ones that are well… good and worth it
Don’t promote just anything, be selective of what you promote, get to know the products inside and out, develop some conviction, and that will help you make the sale.
Alternatively, you can also create your own product and sell that and retain 100% of the profit. You of course can also open an affiliate program where OTHERS sell for you and you just pay them a cut.
What Sort of Products?
Well, in our market, folks are predominantly looking for more information to improve their businesses and put more money in their pockets. And some of the more internet marketing savvy ones may also be looking at systems/services that can serve them well.
For example:
- how to get more traffic online
- how to better your phone skills
- how to convert more people into buyers from your emails, websites, videos, etc.
- how to create a marketing funnel
- how to automate your prospecting process
The list goes on.
You can, if you have the experience, create your own… or hook up some affiliate products you like and trust and promote those.
Bottom line, if you want to make more money in your business, diversify after a few weeks of getting a lead into promoting affiliate products.
